TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION TO PRACTICE PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

 

DEFINITION OF CONCEPTS

1. General Theoretical Training:

Attendance and completion of at least 200 university or post-university hours of clinical courses and seminars with case presentations from the whole range of psychic pathology: neuroses, psychoses, borderline. The following types of classes and seminars can be considered general training hours: psychiatry, clinical psychology (medical), psychopathology, psychological techniques/tests of clinical investigation, psychotherapy, psychiatric semiology, psychosomatics, etc.

2. Specialized Theoretical Training:

Completion of 200 hours of classes and seminars organized by FROPP or IPA Study Group, in the fields of theory and technique of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

3. Training/Supervising Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist:

A psychotherapist certified by RAPP to provide training and supervision of psychoanalytic psychotherapies, and to be a member of RAPP Professional Committee

4. Personal Training Psychotherapy:

At least 4 years, of 3 sessions per week, individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy with a RAPP training/supervising psychoanalytic psychotherapist.

5. Individual Clinical Supervision:

Two individual supervisions of two psychoanalytic psychotherapy cases. The patients must be seen at least 2 times per week in one case, and 3 times a week in the second. Each case must be supervised , once a week, for a duration of at least two years, by two different RAPP certified training/supervising psychoanalytic psychotherapists.

6. Group Clinical Supervision:

(2-hour case presentation & discussion)

Clinical group discussions conducted during monthly RAPP meetings. It is required that:

· At least two training/supervising psychoanalytic psychotherapists are present during case presentations;

· The psychotherapist-in-training presents cases from his clinical practice periodically and,

· Attends each year a minimum of 7 out of 11 monthly RAPP meetings.

ARPP PROFESSIONAL COMMITTEE

 

BYLAWS

 

1. Members of the Committee

 

Members are all ARPP active members at the level of supervisors/trainers.

 

2. Leadership

 

The Committee is led by a president, whose term is 2 years, elected by majority vote by the Committee members

 

3. Committee attributions

 

Writes, proposes to the General Assembly, and enforces the following:       

-        The bylaws of the Professional Committee

          -         The criteria for admission and enrollment in the ARPP

          -         The criteria for certification in psychoanalytic psychotherapy

`         -         The ethics code for the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy based on the criteria for admission, training, evaluation, professional certification, and ethical norms approved by the General Assembly ;

          -         Establishes the program(s) of continuing education for the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy, as well as a list of qualified instructors, personal psychotherapists, trainers and supervisors

          -         Proposes the professional activities of the ARPP.

 

4.  Committee activities

 

- The Committee meets monthly, and, in case of need, in special sessions, at the request of at least 2 members

 

- The Committee decisions are adopted by a majority vote and are recorded in minutes which shall be recorded in the Activity Log

 

- The Committee meeting will be announced at least 15 days prior to the meeting date

 

- A quorum of ½+1 of members is necessary for the meeting to take place; voting (including by electronic means) is mandatory for all Committee members, with the exception of the personal therapist if the matter regards the professional status of the therapist’s analysand

 

- All Committee members must have at their disposal the complete file needed for reaching a decision (i.e., files containing CVs, evaluation reports, case presentations, etc.)

 

- Deviations from any of the requirements of the current bylaws will render the Committee’s decision null and void

 

5. Committee responsibilities

 

- Establishment of norms for certification of ARPP members

- Review of application documents for admission to the ARPP, in accordance with the certification requirements

-  The annual review of supervision/evaluation reports of ARPP members under supervision, so as to provide trainees with feedback on their progress

CRITERIA FOR ENROLLING AS A MEMBER IN THE ARPP

 

 

The candidates for membership must meet the following minimal requirements:

 

 

- Diploma and licensure in: Psychology, Medicine, Social Work, Sociology, Pedagogy, Special Education or Philosophy.

 

- 200 hours of general theoretical training

 

- A minimum of 150 sessions of personal analysis or personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy with one of the ARPP trainers or with a member of the Study Group

 

- The majority vote by the Committee after preliminary interviews with Committee members (excluding the personal analyst)

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR PSYCHOANALYTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

 

1. Certifications for practice under supervision

 

Minimal Requirements

 

a)   Meeting the requirements for admission to the ARPP

 

b)   Initiation/continuation of specialty theoretical training recognized by the ARPP.

c)   Personal interview by 2 members of the Committee, followed by discussion of the application by the entire Committee

 

 

Certification for practice under supervision recquires a periodic re-evaluation of the therapist, based on the supervisor’s report.

 

The certification will be valid for 2 calendar years, and will be renewed periodically, to ensure the continuity of didactic training and of supervision, until such time as the trainee can be recognized as an independent practitioner.

 

An interruption of more than 2 years in theoretical instruction or in supervision will result in loss of certification as a therapist in supervision; however, the candidate can retain association membership without certification. The candidate must resume training in order to be re-certified.

  

2. Certification for independent practice

 

Basic recquirements:

 

a)    Completion of the training therapy.

b)    Completion of the 2 individually supervised clinical cases. 

c)    Participation in at least 50 hours of group supervision

d)    200 hours of specialty didactic training; these hours must be distinct from those of general theoretical training.

e)    At least 5 years of clinical practice, with at least 2000 hours of individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

 

Certification for independent practice can be obtainded upon presentation of 2 cases of psychoanalytic psychotherapy (at least twice/week), in front of 2 members of the Commitee of the ARPP (excluding personal therapists or supervisors of the candidate in training).

The application file must contain current supervisory reports, as well as the reports of the the 2 members of the ARPP Professional Commitee who heard the case presentations.

 

3. Certification as training psychotherapist/supervisor

 

Basic Requirements:

 

a) Practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy for at least 5 years after certification for independent practice and with at least 7000 sessions of individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

b) Involvement in scientific/training activities regarding psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis;

      c) Active participation in the inter-supervision group;

      d) A presentation to the Professional Committee of a case of psychoanalytic psychotherapy in independent practice of at least 2 years duration.

 

Certification as training and supervising psychotherapist is awarded by the Professional Committee of the ARPP, following a candidate interview, by a simple majority vote of the Committee members.

 

Any infraction regarding any topic of the current bylaws will render the Committee’s decision null and void
